Community of Hope in China
SiPing- Jilin, China
The Numbers
Officially, China numbers its orphan population around 20,000, however unofficial numbers range anywhere between 3 million to 20 million. Human Rights Watch has reported that over 72% of institutionalized orphans in China will never make it to childhood due to poor institutional conditions.
The Plan
We began partnering with the SiPing Children’s Welfare Institute in November of 2008. When we first encountered the orphans of SiPing, it was a cold October day and the temperature of the orphanage was below freezing because there was no money to pay for the necessary coal to heat the building. The children didn’t have sufficient food and there was no formula for the babies. Compounding the obvious physical problems, there was only three “nanny’s” taking care of roughly 55 children. Since then, the orphans have moved into a new building, we are providing all of the formula and cereal for the children, we’ve added additional staff to help with the children’s nurturing and social development. We also provide clothing and help with medical needs as they arise.
Additionally, through our capital projects initiative, we’re looking to expand and staff a special needs rehabilitation room, continue to increase the general staff and start a skills training school for the older children.
Lastly, but certainly not least, we want you to join us and visit this amazing community that you will be helping to build and sustain. Check back soon for a our interactive China Community Page where you’ll be able to see photos of the children, write the children as well as sign-up for upcoming trips to SiPing or work with our team to set up a trip to SiPing for your own group!
The Process
Our SiPing Community of Hope is overseen and run by our China Director, Angela Shen. Angela has worked within the Chinese adoption program for many years and is intimately acquainted with the vast orphanage network across the country. She is an amazing individual who has a deep love and heart for the orphans of China. She also spent two years working in an orphanage herself, serving their needs and being the comfort they desperately desire.
Angela regularly visits our SiPing community, spends time with the children, and personally purchases all the food, formula and other supplies, and meets with the director and works strategically with the staff on expanding our work within the orphanage.
